Is life pulling you multiple directions? We can only handle so many demands on our time and attention. Most people try to balance the demands of a job, family and friends. Others add commitments to church, ministry, sports, organizations or other activities. Is there ever time for us?
Jesus showed us how to allot our time in Mark chapter six. One day, a great crowd gathered around him, and even though he had planned to spend the day with his disciples, Jesus took time to teach these people. When the day grew late, he fed them all with five small loaves and two little fish. Jesus is keenly aware of our physical and spiritual needs, and he takes our needs very seriously.
Jesus knew His disciples also needed his time, however, today the masses came first. Today, however, even before Jesus sent the multitude away, he directed his disciples to get in a boat and cross to the other side of the lake. After dismissing the crowd, Jesus then went into the mountains alone to pray.
Does this mean work comes first, self comes second, and family or friends come last? Not at all! That may be how this appears, but we must remember that spending time alone with our Maker is extremely important work.
The other morning, I turned on my lights as I drove to work through a heavy fog. However, when I parked, I forgot to turn my lights off. Imagine my surprise later that day when my vehicle wouldn’t start. When I discovered the light switch was still on, I knew what had drained my battery. I hooked up a battery charger and waited. Eventually, the battery was recharged enough to start the engine and I drove home.
With so many demands on our time and energy it’s easy to get run-down. If our battery is dead, we are not much use to anyone. Jesus knew that was true, and he went directly to the Lord in prayer when he needed recharged. When planning our day, we need to schedule time to plug into our battery charger, God’s Word. When we have, we never again need fear running out of power.
The Bible contains both life and power. Listen to what the psalmist says in Psalm 119: 93, “I will never forget your commandments, for by them you give me life.” (The Holy Bible NLT)
